What is a UV Water Sterilizer?

UV disinfector is a water treatment system and one of the most effective methods of water treatment disinfection. It can be used to remove most forms of microbial contamination from water. After the incoming water enters the UV disinfector, approximately 99% of the bacteria in the raw water are eliminated within 10 seconds under UV light and no additional chemicals are required.

Deactivation of the microbes is achieved when the germicidal rays come into contact with the microbes’ DNA. The rays annihilate the microbes’ genetic makeup consequently inhibiting reproduction or further growth.

How Do UV Water Sterilizers Function?

UV water sterilization equipment gets rid of microbial impurities such as bacteria, viruses, algae, and fungi using ultraviolet germicidal rays at a wavelength of 253.7 nanometers. The UV rays attack the nucleic acid of the microbe’s DNA cells, consequently inhibiting growth and reproduction.

When raw water is injected into the UV sterilization equipment, it is subjected to germicidal radiation emanating from the UV lamp. The dispersed rays annihilate the microorganism’s DNA consequently producing disinfected water. UV water sterilizers have a 99.99% kill rate and the entire disinfection process is chemical-free.

How Long does it Take to Get the Disinfected Water?

The time taken to disinfect water using UV germicidal radiations is commonly referred to as the exposure time. Ordinarily, it takes approximately 10 seconds of exposure to UV radiation at 253.7 nanometers for most microbial pollutants to die. However, the exposure time may vary depending on the UV dosage.

Is the Water Produced with UV Water Disinfectors Safe to Drink?

UV disinfectors are the economical, effective, and preferred solution for water disinfection. They eliminate 99.99% of biological pollutants and hardly utilize any chemicals. However, their impurity removal scope is limited to biological impurities only, hence they are often deployed alongside other water purification systems.

How Often Should a UV Water Sterilizer Be Cleaned?

Typical UV water sterilizers necessitate thorough and frequent cleaning in order to operate optimally. The UV quartz sleeve, which houses the UV lamp should be cleansed after every 12 months to mitigate the over-accumulation of dirt.  Cleaning should be undertaken using a sodium hydrosulfite solution.

When Should the UV Lamp Be Replaced?

The UV lamp is responsible for generating and dispersing the UV-C germicidal rays used to kill microbes. However, after continued use, the lamp’s intensity starts to deteriorate, which can negatively impact the sterilizer’s disinfection rate. One should replace the UV lamp once its intensity drops tremendously and this is often after one year or 9,000 hours of use.

Is a UV Sterilizer for Water Treatment Worth?

Yes. Microbiologically contaminated water can cause waterborne illnesses such as typhoid and cholera. Having a functional UV sterilizer gets rid of these microbes in advance thereby protecting you and your close ones from waterborne diseases. Additionally, the price of owning UV sterilizers has shrunk in recent years and their operation and maintenance are stress-free.
