Ultra-filtration (UF) is the purification and separation of solutions through semi-permeable membranes using forces such as pressure or concentration gradients. UF (Ultrafiltration) and RO (Reverse Osmosis) technology both use the principle of membrane filtration, using ultrafiltration membrane and reverse osmosis membrane as the core filtration device, the main difference between the two is the difference in the size of the filter pores, and that is, the difference in filtration accuracy.
Ultrafiltration membrane made of hollow fiber, pore size between 0.01 to 0.1 micron, can filter out solids/particles as small as 0.02 micron, including bacteria, macromolecular impurities, microorganisms, colloids, etc., but can not remove dissolved minerals, TDS, etc. in the water. Compared to RO systems, UF systems are less capable of desalination, and filtered water can be used to make mineral water, etc.
The pore size of the RO membrane is very fine, about 0.0001 microns, which can filter almost all ions except water molecules, including heavy metals. The desalination effect is good, and the output water is pure water, so the quality of the produced water is relatively higher. Reverse osmosis – generally used for deep water treatment, making pure water, high purity water systems.
The ultrafiltration system can filter the most solid particles in the fluid, but it cannot filter out the dissolved particles like the reverse osmosis system. However, ultrafiltration systems can filter smaller particles than microfiltration or standard carbon filters.
Ultrafiltration systems retain healthy minerals, remove microscopic contaminants, can operate at low pressure, have lower operating costs, and are environmentally friendly and energy efficient. But produced water does not ensure that all viruses and dissolved ions are removed.
RO water purifiers provide a higher degree of purification and produce safer purer water. And the semi-permeable membrane lasts longer than the UF membrane. But it cannot operate at low water pressure, and the filtration process removes some beneficial trace elements, including sodium, magnesium, and calcium.
