How Do Salt Water RO Systems Function?

Salt water reverse osmosis systems utilize reverse osmosis membrane technology to apply pressure to the raw water to reverse the typical osmotic pressure before the water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane. Dissolved salts and other unwanted impurities in seawater are eliminated as a high-pressure pump acts as a pressure driver allowing the raw water to enter the membrane system, thereby separating the impurities from the pure water molecules.

The impounded contaminants are retained on one side of the membrane, while the pure water is collected as the other side of the reverse osmosis membrane. Salt and other organics are flushed into the drain with the brine stream.
